Excel Vlookup / = If Help

    Hi All,

Average Excel user at best and wonder if someone can help!

What I'm trying to do is:

I have a download from an accounting software in Excel and I'm trying to do a lookup but instead of =vlookup(A1,'filename'!$A:$Z,2,false) I want it to work if A1 appears in the first 8 character of 'filname'!$A:$Z,2,false. (A1 is 123 lookup file cell is 123 abcdef)
Does that make sense or can it be done?

    Thanks

    Maybe

    =Vlookup(A1&"*",'filename'!$A:$Z,2,false)
Where there is a will there are many ways.

Can you be more specific about your data table? Is the value you want to look up in Column A? or anywhere between A and Z? If in A, try this

    =INDEX(filename!$B:$B,MATCH(A1&"*",filename!$A:$A,0))
    Does that work for you?

substitute commas with semi-colons if your region settings requires
