Date Sort and Filter problem

I have a sheet (attached to this thread) that I could use some advice one. I want to have better functionality with date sorting and filtering.

Problem 1 Sorting is off when dd field goes from 1 to 2 spaces. I have no control over the data, DBA will not change that. What are my options?

Problem 2 is their an easy way I can add filtering by ranges or single days other than what Im seeing currently on this sheet. I would like to add calendar popup to select ranges or single dates. I am not stuck on any method just looking for ideas and suggestions.

To convert col A to dates, select the column, Data > Text to columns, Finish
