    Displaying numbers too big for a cell

    If I type text into a cell and that text is longer than the width of the cell, the text simply bleeds into the cell to the right and I can see all the text (after pressing Enter).

    However, if I type a number into a cell that is longer than the width of the cell, then after pressing Enter it displays as ####### (unless the cell is resized).

    How can I make the number display by bleeding into the cell to the right, as text does? I want to avoid converting the numbers to text to achieve this, as I still need to work on the numbers in formulas.

    Any help appreciated,

    Wibs

    Hi,

    I generally don't recommend merging cells but one way would be to merge the cell with its neighbour to the right.

    Horizontal alignment 'centre across selection' achieves a similar effect to merging, but produces fewer issues (merged cells are Excel's dirty STD) - unfortunately the alignment must be centred...obviously.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

    Unfortunately I have 100s of these, so manually merging or centering across selection would be tiresome in the extreme.

    I had rather hoped that there was some global option, setting, start-up switch, whatever, to force numbers to display, even by bleeding into the cell to the right, if necessary, in the same way that text does.

    A workaround would be entering numbers as text, and when you need them in a formula refer to the cell *1

    f.i. =A1*1 instead of only A1

    You can set centre across selection as the alignment for an entire selection at once (e.g. several columns, or a whole table).

    You can also use 'merge across' to merge a selection horizontally keeping rows separate (yucky).
