    Merging spreadsheets

Hey all, this is my first post. I'm using Excel 2007.

I'm in a need of a bit of help - I have searched a bit through the forums but couldn't find anything, plus I'm really not very skilled with excel, at least beyond common basics. I'm confident there exists a very easy solution to my problem though.

    Anyways, here's the question:

I have two excel spreadsheets with two columns each. In both spreadsheets the data in the second column corresponds to the data in the first - for example, in the first file we have names of people in the first and their age in the second column. In the second file we again have the names in the first with their, say, weight in the second coumn.

I'd like to merge the two spreadsheets into one, where the first column would contain people names, second one their age and third one their weight.

The tricky part is that the files don't have precisely the same pool of names in the first column - the first file contains some names that are missing in the second, and vice versa.

Just to be completely clear, here's an example:

    1st spreadsheet:

    \1

    2nd spreadsheet:

    \1

    My goal:

    \1

I'm only interested in those names, which have both entries, the age and the weight, so the result may also look like this:

    \1

Problem is that I have to perform this kind of merging on a substantional number of such pairs of spreadsheets, each containing a few thousand lines - which of course rules out the manual merging.

I'd be much obliged if a good soul would point me in the right direction.

EDIT: Is it not possible to post screenshots directly in the post using the "img" tags?

    Re: Merging spreadsheets

    Hi,

We generally prefer you to upload actual workbooks rather than pictures of workbooks. However in the absence of a workbook one of the standard approaches is to use VLOOKUP() to check whether one value exists in another list and if it does report it. And then wrap the VLOOKUP() in an IF(ISERROR()) function.

    Thanks a lot Richard!

I've never been forced to work with functions in excel (apart from mathematical ones) - I tried VLOOKUP and it does precisely what I want. Thanks again!
