    excel 2007 formula bar problem

    hi,
i have a big problem with my excel 2007.

when i open excel, the formula bar is displayed on the entire page. i cannot do anything with it. when i move the cursor on the top of the formula bar, i see a pop-up "expand formula bar (ctrl+shift+U)" if i close the formula bar i can see only very tiny cells and can't see my data. I don't understand where exactly the problem is. please help me. please let me know if i need to provide additional specific details of the problem.

    thanks

Move the mouse to the Upper - Right corner, where you see a double up arrow, you could see "Collapse the Formula Bar" then click the double up arrow.
Or you could move the mouse on the lower side of the Formula Bar, when it chage to be a two dimensions arrow, then drag it up.

    See the picture: http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...FormulaBar.jpg

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

Looking at your screenshot, I see "fx" perfectly fine in the upper left corner. (Just left of the white space of the function bar where you can enter/edit formulas.)

How about showing us a screenshot of your entire page, not just the upper right corner of your screen?

What view are you using? Normal? Page Layout? Page Break Preview?

    What is the zoom level?

If this does not affect all workbooks, upload the workbook in question to this site.

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

Do you have a template workbook in either of your XLSTART folders?
If you hold down the Ctrl key while opening Excel normally and choose Yes to open in Safe Mode, does it fix the display?

In your picasa screenshot, the Table tools tab is visible. In your last screenshot it is not. Is there a table in your file?
What happens when you hold down the Ctrl key and use the mouse wheel to zoom in and zoom out. Does that work?

the default font size is 11. even if i increase the font size, it is not making any difference. i guess there is some critical setting which is being modified which i donot understand.

From the last screen-shot I'd go with romperstompers' earlier thoughts

Is it possible that the formula bar is switched off?

Office Button > Excel Options > Advanced

    Scroll down to "Display"

Make sure the Show formula bar checkbox is checked

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

We turned it off earlier as a temporary solution to the fact that it was obscuring the entire workbook!
To fix that, from what I can see of the screenshot, would probably require a registry change - I'm not sure how confident the OP is with that?

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

it is not making any difference if there is a table or not. when i zoom it, the cell is increasing in width direction but not in length direction. if there is data, i can see the data only in page break view.

when i click continuously on these different view options, suddenly i get a error message " Not enough system resources to display completely"

    thanks

    Sorry romperstomper,

    I missed your post #11
The page was at post #15 when I posted #19

This is how long it took me to respond, I keep getting extremely slow reaction from the BB between
approx 09:30 and 10;30 (BST) often resulting in
Oops! This page appears broken. DNS Error - Server cannot be found.
No other sites are affected, and it does the same on several computers.

    It's becoming a real pain.

OK then, let's have a little look before we start changing anything.
First thing - open the registry editor (start-run, type Regedit and press enter)
    Now navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options
in the left hand pane, right-click the Options item and choose export, then select a location to export the file to.
Now locate the .reg file you just created, zip it and post it here so I can see what settings you have.

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

OK, that seems to be fine (I deleted all my settings and replaced them with yours just to be sure).
Can you repeat the process but with:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Toolbars
    please?

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

Nope - those seem to be OK too.
Can you have a look in your:
    C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\Application data\temp\Office
folder (I'm assuming WinXP) do you have an Excel.qat file?
If so, can you move it somewhere else (with Excel closed) and then start Excel?

Also can you tell us what, if any files, you have in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

    hi,

i am using windows vista. i could not locate the documents and settings folder in vista.

I tried to give search for the mentioned file name which did not return any result. I could find one XLSTART folder in the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12

    however, this folder is empty.

Re: excel 2007 formula bar problem

When searching you need to include hidden folders. For Vista I think the paths would be:
    C:\users\username\AppData\Local\temp\Office

    C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel
    and
    C:\users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

You may want to search for Excel.qat to locate the first folder.

while searching i have included hidden files and folders.

The correct location on Vista for the qat file is:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office

NBVC has very kindly reminded me of this MSKB article which contains some good troubleshooting steps and various automated FixIt tools. It may be time to give them a try!

Let's try cleaning out the registry (Excel will recreate it). With Excel closed, open the registry editor again, locate:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel
export it, then right-click and Delete it.
Now restart Excel and see if anything has changed.

never the less, i appreciate your efforts.

    the default font is Calibri.

when i uninstall office, is there a way to uninstall completely with all the settings, so that if i reinstall office, it might give me with normal settings. perhaps, this could be last option.

    thanks

Maybe contact Microsoft Support? Go to Office Button, Excel Options, Resources.....
