    creating a future reminder date and hiding it until due

    I've just bought and loaded Microsoft office 2010 and have no experience of excel at all so I apologise for my lack of understanding of how it all works. I have been reading the forums but have become totally confused,( but have learnt quite a few things along the way) I have had a go and am enjoying learning something new.
    The task-- I want to create something that shows the name of a person, their qualifications, the date the qualification is gained and (this is where I am struggling) a reminder of the renewal date. BUT I was hoping that the renewal date could be kept hidden until a month before and then it could flash up as a reminder.
    I have discovered how to use 'edate' to do the right calculation but the reminder date is always on view, so it doesn't draw your attention to it. Can anyone advise if this is possible please? If it is I would appreciate the solution in plain language, otherwise I might have to take to my bed with brain fatigue. I hope I have explained the problem OK
    Thanks very much

    Hi nje,

    Welcome to the forum, you could do with updating your profile as it still saying you are on Excel 2003.

    Also to get over your problem you could use Conditional Formatting, here are some examples here

    Re: creating a future reminder date and hiding it until due

    Old chippy, thanks for the link.
    I've managed some degree of success but more by stumbling around, I still don't really understand what I've done but I'm nearly there now. I could just do with a bit more help to sort out some formulas.
    I have created the date by using =NOW() then another column with the start date then another column to calculate the expiry date, calculated from the start date column =EDATE(A2,12)
    This gives me the renewal date.
    To create a pop up warning in red I have done a conditional format on another column to turn the text red and I have also entered the following formula.
    =IF(DATEVALUE("2/7/2010")-10>TODAY(),"2/7/2010","Renewal Due by 2/7/2010")
    This seems to work and it changes colour and warns that a renewal is due currently 10 days before (which I can modify later)
    The question is - can I join two formulas together so that the calcculation can be done and the warning can be done in the same column?
    I tried this but it didn't work and to be honest my head has gone. example of what I tried below

    =EDATE(A2,12)=IF(DATEVALUE("2/7/2010")-10>TODAY(),"2/7/2010","Renewal Due by 2/7/2010")
    If anyone can help be gentle with me please!! I'm very pleased with what I've achieved but still don't really understand how I've done it.
    I will continue to read the help provided on this site and will improve soon, I promise
    Thanks

    Hi,

    Can you post a sample workbook, but save it as 2007 format so I can open it?

    Thanks, I've uploaded it but I only had the option as far as I could tell to save it as 2003 or 2010 so I have sent both. I hope you can open it. Thanks for taking the trouble to look at it.

    Oldchippy, It certainly does, thanks very much especially for the explanation of what you have done, it makes it clear so I can hopefully develop my skill a bit more now, you couldn't recommend a decent book for beginners that I can buy could you? I'm struggling with the jargon as well as the formulas. Sorry for being inpatient for the answer, Thanks again

    Hi,

    Glad to hear it helped, as for books there's plenty out there and also many websites offering tutorials.
