Time-series Chart w/ diff x periods

I'm trying to figure out a way to display annual data as a bar chart with quarterly stock data overlayed as a line graph. So far, I've only been able to fake the annual data as 4 equal quarterly values in order to have the required granularity in the stock data. And with this, I can't figure out how to close the gap between the bars. (the Gap Width is already at 0%)

I've attached two examples. The first one is using only annual data. I need the bar chart part of this to look the same as in this example (graphSample.jpg), but the S&P500 data (the line graph) to be quarterly, so 4 times as many values.

The second example (Book9_edit.xlsx) attempts use quarterly data by using four equal values in the bar chart. (but again, the gap width..)

Any suggestions? Is this even possible in Excel?
