vlookup incorrect return

I have what should be simple excel problem, but its driving me nuts.

I have 2 columns:

Year Excess(1000)
2009 28,700
2009 5,567
2008 22,302
2007 16,000
2009 2,100
2008 50,769
2007 12,934

Now data would be entered for potentially 5 years of data, but could be multiple enteries for each year, so when I do a vlookup its just pulling one back. I need it to register all the 2009,2008,2007 years etc, with corresponding total, e.g. 2009 should return £36,367.

Any help much appreciated.
