    Name and Score by rank

Go easy with me guys, as I have searched high and low, and have come up with a heap of "nearly there" formulas, but none are exactly what I want.

The workings on the left are for when the competitors arrive at the weigh in, and we record their results (5 biggest fish), and then get a tally. Thats no dramas, as I have that bit sorted.

The workings on the right are where I have become stuck! I have figured out how to rank the scores (highest to lowest), but I need the associated name, from (B5:B74) in the "name" colum (L3:L72)

I hope you can understand that lot.

    Thanks in advance,

    Leigh.

    Re: Help a newbie

    Hi,

The file you attached is pasted rather than an excel file, so i can only give you guidance rather than a solution.

Am sure there are many ways, but here is how i would go about it.

    Offset(B$1,sum(if(m3=h$5:h$100,row(h$5:H$100),0)),0)

This is an array formula and must be entered with ctrl shift enter.

the sum part of the formula returns the row that matches the score.

If two scores are same this will need refinement.

I have not tested it but can help further if it does not work for you

    Regards JV

    Re: Help a newbie

Per your note on the other thread we can assume duplicity of score.

If you post a sample file (remove anything confidential) we can offer you guidance.

Assuming the competitor names are unique you should find the solution on the "other" thread that you were looking at will work - please put in place whatever you tried in regard to that approach.

    Re: Help a newbie

I am assuming that formula would be placed in L3...if so, it doesnt work.

If you could tell me how to save as a excel file, I will do that to make things easier.

    Re: Help a newbie

You can attach a file using the paperclip icon in the reply window - if you can't see it click GoAdvanced.

edit: on an aside please also revise your thread title to something more relevant to the problem at hand, eg: "Retrieving Names by Rank" or something along those lines
(better titles aid the search functionality thereby allowing others to find relevant solutions)

Your post does not comply with Rule 1 of our Forum RULES. Your post title should accurately and concisely describe your problem, not your anticipated solution. Use terms appropriate to a Google search. Poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice will be addressed according to the OP's experience in the forum: If you have less than 10 posts, expect (and respond to) a request to change your thread title. If you have 10 or more posts, expect your post to be locked, so you can start a new thread with an appropriate title.
To change a Title on your post, click EDIT then Go Advanced and change your title, if 2 days have passed ask a moderator to do it for you.

and if only to sate our curiosity - were you able to adapt the example from the "other" thread or did you conjure up an alternative approach ?

It's always good if you can post up your solution as this may help others faced with similar issues.
