    Exclamation city - state formula

I need a formula by which if I enter a city name in a cell, the name of the state in which that city is situated will be displayed in the next cell.
For eg: if I enter Chicago in A1, then B1 should display Illinois.

I need it only for major cities

Is it possible to make a formula like that?...please let me know...

    Re: city - state formula

You can do that with VLOOKUP formula.

    =VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, [range_lookup])

You just need to define somewhere (table_array) all cities and states
Never use Merged Cells in Excel

Best way to ilustrate your problem is to upload some .xls example with desired inputs in outputs.

With generally asked question we can't do more than give general answer. Sorry

So best way would be to look somewhere how use VLOOKUP.. For example here:

It's just few minutes so try follow instructions and if you can't make it work please upload example workbook.
