    Table Array for AVERAGE function

    I want to use AVERAGE with VLOOKUP functions being used to define the table array. Is this possible and if so what is the correct way of writing the formula?

    Can you upload example workbook (.xls) with desired inputs and outputs?
    Never use Merged Cells in Excel

    Column A will be a numerical list. Column B will be also be a numerical list. So;

    A1=5
    A2=10
    A3=15
    A4=20
    A5=25

    B1=3
    B2=4
    B3=5
    B4=6
    B5=7

    I want to find the AVERAGE of the range B2:B4 but I only have values for Column A to identify the range. Therefore I am looking to use VLOOKUP to identify the range to be calculated.

    Still not clear, however, I suspect that the functions AVERAGEIF & AVERAGEIFS may be what you're after - see XL Help for more info. on these and their practical application.

    (note however neither is backwards compatible with earlier versions should this be a concern)
