Ability to sort a table when the sheet is protected

I have a sheet with several rankings tables on it. When the sheet is protected I am not able to sort the data. I want users to be able to sort the data without messing up the data! Is there a way around this?

Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet, then check the Sort box.

That does not work, i think it might be because they are tables?
