If cell contains text, add 1 to another cell

    Hey all,
I have searched and searched. Maybe my keywords are not correct or I dont understand what I'm reading but here goes.

What is the easiest way to create a formula on my excel sheet.
I have a row of names, then I have a box in a seperate cell that wants to know how many names in that column I have.

What is the best way to set a formula that gives me: If cell A1:A7 contain text, add +1 to cell A8????

    TIA

    Maybe:

    =COUNTA(A1:A7)
Where there is a will there are many ways.
