How do I limit column length and jump to next column?

I've been digging for hours now and i cant seem to get this to do what i want. Basically i want to limit a column to a specific format and length so when the cell is full it jumps to the next column, similar to when filling out a form on VB. For example i'd like to have a column for part numbers, when i put in 0000-00-000 it stops me from putting in any more input and jumps to the next column. I formatted the cell so it puts in the dashes for me, but if I put in more then the desired numbers it just puts the begging numbers before the first dash. I tried using data validation but that only warns me that i made a mistake instad of stopping me from entering more information. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I doubt that this can be done in Excel. There is no check that I'm aware of that you can run while you are editing a cell. Data validation happens on confirming the data entry, and VBA would probably work on the same principle, i.e. first the data is entered, then it is evaluated for correctness.

What might be possible with VBA is that after data entry the cell is checked for length and everything over the limit is copied into the next cell.
