Filter for unique values on an already auto-filtered list?

I have a list that I have used auto filter for several columns. I want to take this filtered list and then filter for unique values on one of the remaining columns. When I try and do an advanced filter for unique values it removes the auto-filters. I then can't seem to just replace the auto-filters either, as after the advanced filter is in place the auto filters seem to only see an abbreviated list. (For example, I have a column for year that has ranges from 2009 - 2014, before the advanced filter I can filter fine, after the advanced filter I can still see values for all years, but the auto filter will only allow me to filter on 2009).

I am using Excel 2003, but can copy into 2007 if there are better options there.
