Hi,
Does anyone now if it's possible to freeze left and right hand columns simultaneously eg. cell C3 above and left AND cell DB3 above and right?
The columns on between would then scroll left or right, until the static column was reached?
Cheers

often wanted, never achieved. I don't think this is possible.
You can set the ScrollArea property of the sheet ...
Entia non sunt multiplicanda sine necessitate
shg, can you explain what to expect? It does not seem to have any effect other that I cannot select cells outside of the defined ScrollArea. But all rows and columns still move with the scrolling.
Just what you said. I can't visualize what the OP is asking for if not that. A window of scrolling rows with static rows above and below? If so, I agree that there's no way.
The way I read the OP's request is that column A should be the leftmost, colum DB should always be visible as the rightmost column, and that the columns in between scroll sideways. Like a frame. That's why I said it was not doable. Would be nice to have, though!
Hard to say the reason for this, the op could grab the scroll bar and move it over, I believe the proper term is split columns.
Using window split is similar to freeze panes, i.e. you can only have at most two vertical and/or two horizontal areas of the screen, no more. The OP would want three vertical areas, with the middle one having a horizontal scroll bar and the left and right area frozen to a specific column.
One would think that a combination of freeze panes and window split might do the trick, but unfortunately they can not be applied at the same time.
Thanks for the clarification.
Hi,
Thanks for the comments. I'm not surprised.
Teylyn, you got it right:
"the way I read the OP's request is that column A should be the leftmost, colum DB should always be visible as the rightmost column, and that the columns in between scroll sideways. Like a frame. That's why I said it was not doable. Would be nice to have, though!"
I've an application where it would be useful to have 365 days (x axis), one day per column. Y axis contains a list of customers, each of whom has one or two activity days per month. Different activities have different colours. The number of customers fits one screen high and i'd like to show the customer list on the left hand side, with one month activity inbetween. Operators would have reduced excuse for either inputting or mis-reading activity types or when due!
Never mind. Does this count as solved?
Cheers
Hi,
I've just had another idea.
Might one solution be for Col C to contents to always appear in (say) the 35th visible column on the right. Is this possible in such a way that scrolling would be smooth, without taking ages to refresh? We're using Excel 2003 currently.
Rgds
Maybe you could use the camera feature? Capture a picture of the DB column and position it on the right hand side of the screen or in every 35th column.
The captured picture is dynamic in that whatever changes in DB will be seen in the picture as the changes occur.
Maybe the VBA geniuses here (I assure you I am not one) could provide code to keep the picture at the extreme right edge of the visible screen.

Thanks Cutter,
That sounds interesting...but I'm not familiar with the concept.
Inserting a dynamic picture of a column and making it stick to the right would work for me.
Pasting every 35th column wouldn't - I could do that anyway - but I need an uninterrupted view of data between end of one month and start of next.
Any suggestions anyone?
If you are using Excel 2003, your column limit is 256, so you won't be able to have a column for each day of the year.
Sticking a camera tool capture to a cell can also be achieved by referencing the cell in the column. It does not solve the problem of the sideways scrolling, though.
The only approach I see is to have all data that you want to be permanently visible arranged to the left and then freeze panes.

Teylyn, I hadn't appreciated the column limit in 2003.
I just used DB as an example.
What a pain.
Let's end here as there's no way of solving the fundamental column view problem.
Thanks for everyone's input.

I've just added a feature to FormulaDesk, my free Excel add-in, that allows you to freeze any combination of columns and/or rows and display them on the right (for frozen columns) or the bottom (for frozen rows).
Please let me know if you find any issues, or if you can think of any improvements.
