[Solved]Vlookup

I have excel 2007 and I have a column that contains drop down boxes thats tied to a list. I am looking for a way to search the whole column for a word that may or may not contain that word and then if it finds it return a number from another column in the same sheet. I have read about vlookup but not sure if that is what I need or not.
