Excel 2007 files can't be launched from Explorer

A number of problems has developed with Excel on my computer
    1. When I try to launch an excel file by double clicking in Explorer I get error message "Windows cannot find <<name of file>>". NB I can open the file by launching Excel from the programs window and then using open file in excel.
    2. If I right click on a sheet tab I get noting
    3. Right clicking on a column or row also has no effect

Hi Coatond, and welcome to the forum.

    1. Are your file types (.xlsx, .xlsm, etc.) configured in Explorer correctly? Perhaps there is also an issue in the registry (see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323216)

2 & 3. Somehow your context menus must have been turned off (via macro?). To re-enable the right-click menus for the sheet tabs and cells, copy and paste the following code into the VB Editor and run each macro. Close the VB Editor and you should be able to right-click on those areas again.

    Paul

Thank you, that is a leap forward. Running that code has enabled the right click on the sheet tabs, but not the right click on the row or column.

I have noticed another problem. Command 'prepare->properties' does not show the properties commands

    try
    Office Button/ click Excel Options/Advanced
and then click to clear the "Ignore other applications that use dynamic data exchange (dde)" box (or try it the other way around)
    Click OK.

    Martin
I unchecked the option you suggest and it worked. Thanks very much.

    I am still unable to
    1. right click on rows and columns
    2. View the workbook properties via office button>prepare>properties

For the prepare -> properties issue, you may want to try the suggestion here:

(Linked to from this thread: http://help.wugnet.com/office/excel-...ct1113469.html)

As for trying to right-click on row and column headers, use the following code:

    Hope that helps!
