    Odd problem

So, when I opened excel I couldn't type in any of the cells or change any settings. Everything is essentially frozen. When I click on the options I can only chose is the resources. I ran a diagnostic but got no useful information.

tl;dr Excel doesn't let me type in any of the cells or change anything else.

Does the same thing happen when you open a previously saved workbook? Several workbooks?

If it only happens when you try to start a new book, perhaps your default NewBook template is somehow "protected". Try your UNPROTECT options.

No dice. I can open the files but can't make any alterations to them.

The only other thing that comes to mind for me is Microsoft's own Software Activation technology. It does this same thing. After 60 days, all editing controls disappear but you can still open and view all documents you've made or receive...basically turning your office into a View Only mode.

Check with MS. They will have you verify your activation key. If it is legitimately active and not a trial copy or pirate copy, they will actually help you uninstall and reinstall from a web portal with a definitely working copy, using your existing key.

    Good luck.
