Hyperlinks fail when workbook is emailed

Hi all, hope someone can help!

I have a workbook with hyperlinks in some cells. They all work fine when its open on my computer. The problem occurs when I attach it to an email, and the recipient opens it. The links are all still there, but they do not work when clicked.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? There is no codes, macros etc in the book, its pretty simple really.

First question is, these aren't hyperlinks to locations on your computer or a networked drive? No offence if this is obvious to you - you never know.

Yep, the links are to word documents on a company network drive. Is that a problem?

I assume you're emailing internally(!)

If you have mapped the network drive the mapping will probably not exist on your recipients' computers.

Rather than try to map everyone to the same drives, make sure links are UNC paths ("//servername/yadayada/file") not mappings ("P:\file")

If you are sending a workbook to a another user and they don't have access to the resource (a server/share/or your pc) they will not be able to open it..

If you can confirm that they have access to the hyperlinks address then the following code example entered in excel works... The example shows me (Leo) creating a link to an image on my pc... But you could add a link to anything pretty much anywhere using the following examples code...

like cheeky charlie says use the unc paths for the shares on the network...

Simply popping a link that references (P: drive will not work on all users, as they may have it mapped differently, also make sure they have at least read permissions on that share/resource. and then use the unc for the hyperlink

At the moment we are just right clicking, hyperlink, select file. Is there an easy way to set it up so it does UNC paths, or do you have to type the full path in each time?

The reason I ask is that a few different people use the sheet, and it may be a bit complicated and time consuming for them.

Well, what I do may not be the best method, I don't bother mapping any network drives, I simply make shortcuts to the folders I need, then all the links I ever deal with are UNC. If you think about it - when you map a drive you have to navigate from network-drive-level to the folder you want (a one-time operation) instead of this, navigate to said folder, make shortcut, copy to (your desktop?) in this way, links to where you need to go frequently are jsut as accessible as network drives but the links are transferable.

As said, my way, not necessarily best - a lateral solution, if you will. It does also mean that if you need to navigate up one level in the network folder you aren't thrust back to your own desktop - that tends to elicit bad words from me.
