Problem copying charts into Word

I have just had a nightmare time in work again! On occasions, because it's not everytime, when I copy & paste a simple chart from an Excel spreadsheet into a Word doc it makes the Word doc HUGE.
I wrote a two page report and included a very simple bar chart. Without the chart the file size was 23.5Kb when I added the chart it increased in size to a whopping 29.8Mb and crashed my email system.
Why does this happen and how can I prevent it? Help please!! Thank you!

Try using the "Paste Special" feature and paste as picture (windows metafile). I've never had any problems with that.
