Display time in time format instead of decimal format

Hello all, first timer and as the username may suggest I may not be a regular so hope you don't mind me just popping in now and again.

I am using Excel 2003 and have an import generated from a third party programme which produces time in hh:mm.

A figure of 362hrs 28min (362.28) is shown in Excel as decimal (362.47).

Can Excel do the time in its original format as opposed to decimal?

If it can, has it also the ability to perform non-decimal additions and subtractions?

    thanks in advance

    Re: Help with time please.

    1) Please edit your title in Post #1, using "help" always gets your post moderated. Simple "Time Format and time calculations" makes it clear to all what the thread is about, yes?

    2) Yes, Excel can add/subtract numbers any way you can.

    3) Mockup a sample workbook showing the dilemma and your desired results, point out where the results came from if not obvious in your sample data.

Then click GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to post up your workbook.

    Re: Help with time please.

Sorry about that, but it looks like I am unable to edit the thread title though, hopefully a Mod will help.

My main question is about the formatting of a cell so it will display 362 hrs 28 mins as 362.28 as opposed to the decimal 362.47

I realise it is probably bread and butter to many of you but I am afraid it has me beat.

    thanks.

Re: Display time in time format instead of decimal format

I edited your thread title as requested.....

You can't make a change like that with simple cell formatting, one option is to use a formula in another cell, e.g. if you have 362.47 in A1 then in B1 you can use this formula

    =A1/24

Then format B1 as [h]:mm using this procedure:

    Select B1
Format > Cells > Number > Custom and type [h]:mm in the box > OK

For calculation purposes though you could quite easily use the data in its original state, did you have a specific calculation in mind?

Re: Display time in time format instead of decimal format

Thank you, that works a treat.

The subsequent calculations are pretty straight forward (I hope) as they are different amounts of paid hours set against various categories for budget purposes. These figures are produced from the other software so what follows in Excel should be a bit of addition, subtraction and some percentages to compare scheduled hours against the actual spend.

What you have given me so far will go a long way towards achieving what I need.

For that, please accept my thanks.
