Athletics Carnival; record results in a shortcut way?

My school has the task of running the Zone's Athletics carnival. Has anyone a suitable spreadsheet set for recording (usual events like running, high jump etc)

Is there a way to give each entrant a number and when they come up to the recording table to say "I came first" we can just type in their number & their full name, age and school will automatically fill in the adjoining cells?

I did a search & there was one entry re carnivals but nothing further. Hope someone can help.
