"read only" message not showing up in office 2007

    Hi All,
I work at a college where we are moving our departments from office 2003 to 2007. One of the problems that some office workers are encountering is that the "this document is being used by another user" message that pops up when opening a document that another user is editing only shows up when they go to save changes on the document, not when they open the document initially. This is very frustrating for them, as they will open a document and make changes only to have them scrapped because it is read only. The function works when opening .xlsx files, but not .xls. I do not want to enable document sharing. Is there anyway to correct this?

    Thanks very much!

Hi Iota, and welcome to the forum.

My offices use both versions (rolling out 2007 now as well), but I do get the read-only warnings on both .xlsx and .xls files when co-workers are using them. Perhaps someone else here in the forum has experienced what you have and can assist.

Thanks Paul, it's good to know that this typically works.
    Anyone else have any ideas?
