    Password protection issue

When opening a new Excel file, it is asking me for a password to an old excel file that was password protected, which I have deleted from my computer. It is still asking for this password every time I open a new or existing file. When I hit cancel it lets me open the file. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the forum.

Maybe the workbook has links (i.e., formulas that refer) to the password-protected file.

Would this happen even when opening a new file?

Do you load from a template in XLSTART?

Are you sure all copies of the file have been deleted?

No, haven't used a template and yes, everything has been deleted. Is there a way you can password protect excel as a whole?

No. There could be a permissions issue to use Excel at all, but it wouldn't manifest like this.

    Hmm...

    Try Detect and Repair first.

    Re: Password protection issue

Are you sure there is nothing in the XLSTART folder? This folder is typically located at C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Xlstart (or Office11 for Excel 2003, or Office12 for Excel 2007).

Another possibility is an add-in may be loading that utilizes the old file.
