    Line Charts

Im getting really confused on how to create a specific line chart. Ive had several go's over the weeks but just cant do it. It's probably something easy or cant be done.
I want the horizontal axis to display years say: 1925, 1926, 1927 and so on.
I want the vertical axis to display a division/league say: division 1, division 2, division 3 and so on.
Now what I want the line to do is show the progress of a single team and show which division that year. For example if it was in division 3 in 1925 and the team got promoted the line would move to division two. Hope someone can help were Im going wrong.
Ive managed to do line charts showing attendances over the years probably because excel puts a number in the vertical axis.

You will have problems if the data is text.

    Can you post your workbook

    Re: Line Charts

The workbook is really huge with many many pages, Ive not really started a section on my teams league and attendance progress, I keep attempting but failing to make the line chart, so I keep putting it off. Ive coppied a page in a new book what I manage to do last night with the data concerned shown in other types of charts but I'd like the line chart as Ive explained in the post above.
I know its going to be too long to run from 1925-2009, I intend doing it in say blocks of 10-15 years.

    Check that out...and scroll down.

I did the line chart like I think you asked but the chart seems a little confusing so I did it as a column chart below. If you want just click on the column chart, change chart type and select the first line chart. Or look at the first XY scatter option where you can play with the markers. Is this what you were wanting?

    Re: Line Charts

The line chart is straight forward. You just need to reverse the plot order of the Y axis to make sense of being in a higher division actually having a lower value.
I used a simple number format to add the Division text.

In the second chart I added a bar chart series in order to use proper axis labels on the vertical Y axis.

One thing to note is the slight angle between changes in divisions. I guess these should really be step lines as the change occured at the end/start of a year rather than progressively during the year.
