Filtering for unique entries based on one column

This may be a basic question but I haven't been able to find the solution:

I'm using Excel 2003. I have a list with repetitive entries in one column and unique entries in the other columns. Example

    0001 a
    0001 b
    0002 c
    0002 d
    0003 e
    0003 f

I need to filter the list so that only unique entries in the first column show up, but I need the rest of the information to carry with it. Example:

    0001 a
    0002 c
    0003 f

I can't use the Avanced Filter > Unique Entries Only function because the information in the adjoining columns is not unique. Please help! Thanks.

Re: Filtering for unique entries based on one column

You can advance filter the first column only, then use Vlookup to get associated date for first occurrance...

e.g.=Vlookup(X1,A:B,2,0) where X1 is first item after filter, A:B contains original list.
Where there is a will there are many ways.

Would I have to repeat that for every unique entry?

Re: Filtering for unique entries based on one column

just copy the formula down the column and it will self-adjust.

To copy formula down... select the cell the first formula is in and click and drag the little black square at the bottom right corner of the cell all the way down the column.

If you then want to get rid of the originals, you will have to convert the formula results to values. To do that, select the column with formulas and copy it, then select the top cell in that column and go to Edit|Paste Special and select Values. Click Ok.

Now it would be safe to delete original columns of duplicates.

Thanks! That should do it, even if it's a little more complicated than I anitcipated.
