Need to know how to find like values in 2 different columns

I have 2 spreadsheets. One is a spreadsheet of inventory that has been maintained by my department and is now my responsibility. The other is a spreadsheet from our fixed asset department. I want to reconcile these spreadsheets. The common data between the spreadsheets is serial number.

What is the most effective way to do this?

Without seeing the data it's hard to give a definitive solution but ...

I would suggest you investigate VLOOKUP function ... failing that (if Serial number is not in the left most column of the sheets) be sure to investigate INDEX & MATCH functions ... you will find a plethora of example both in this forum and online in general.

I would also add that you will find life easier in the long run to keep the data in one self contained workbook - ie migrate the 2 .xlsx/m files into 1.
