Excel duplicates & renames every workbook upon opening

    Excel 2003

On one PC (not mine so I’m lost!) every time you open a workbook it changes the name of the workbook.

Open Book_1 and Excel says you have Book_1_(2) open.
So you work and save and work and save and close.

Now tomorrow you have to open Book_1_(2)
And when you do Excel says you have Book_1_(3) open.
So you work and save and work and save and close.

Now later you have to open Book_1_(3)
And when you do Excel says you have Book_1_(4) open.
So you work and save and work and save and close.

    It’s a vicious cycle.

EVEN IF YOU CLOSE EXCEL COMPLETELY and then open Book_1
Excel says you have Book_1_(2) open.

I know, you could open it and immediately resave it as “Book_1” but why should you have to?

Is there some setting that creates a duplicate and renames every time you open a workbook?

(there are no WB Open macros in these workbooks)

i dont know the answer to this problem but i have come up against something similar in which the spaces in the filename are replaced with underscores so work book one becomes work_book_one. if anyone knows a solution i would love to learn it also as its a pain renaming it every time
