Data updated twice a day need to update my excel sheet.

I am getting an exported report from a customers system in excel, it is sent out twice a day. I need to create a workbook that allows me to add columns so I can assign a line item to some one to work on, and track updates. But how do I keep importing the new report data when it will not be in the same order and some items will be added and some with drop off, while keeping the data in the new columns inline with the correct item??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So you need to add the contents of each report cumulatively to a summary report (inc extra columns) of your own? Or do you also need to lose the info when it's no longer on the delivered report?

    I'd recommend a macro.

I would not have to loose the items that are not on the new report, but at least shade them in, or show them closed. How would I put this macro together? Come up with a number that is unique to every item and have it compare the line data in each report updating the one with my added columns?

Don't use colours as the sole expression of any information - it's hideous to work with. Colours should only highlight what is expressed clearly in data.

Do the items not have unique identifiers already? If not, how do you differentiate them?

Thanks for prompt, subscribed threads sometimes slip through.

Would it be possible to add a unique, like a job number to your Final F30 report which could be used to identify which line is which? Then we could simply search the summary sheet for the job numbers in the F30 report, updating anything which has been found and adding a new line for any new jobs. The alternative would be to concatenate the entire row to get as near as possible to a unique reference, but that is (a) tedious (b) not totally robust anyway. As a halfway house, if you could identify a couple of columns which between them will always uniquely identify a job we could use that.
