Assigning job codes into corresponding job code groups

Hi there - I have a question about excel, and am hoping maybe someone here can help steer me in the right direction.

Lets say I have two sets of data:

Set 1 has a persons name and job code

Set 2 has job codes that match those in set one, but also contains groupings of the job codes into job group codes

For the first set of data, I'd like to know if excel can analyze each job code value in Set 1 and populate the corresponding job group code in a new row.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!!

Maybe you can post an example of what you mean?

Re: Assigning job codes into corresponding job code groups

I think I may have just figured it out...it's just a simple vlookup.

    Source 1:
    First, Last, Job Code

    John, Doe, TX1001

    Source 2:
    Job Code, Job Code Group

    TX1001, Cardiology

I was struggling because I was thinking the groups and codes were at different grains, but then I just populated the code group for each job code to make it the same level of granularity. Then a vlookup worked fine.
