renaming header row in pivot table source data

If I rename cells(s) in the header row of my pivot table source data, the next time I refresh the pivot table, the corresponding column(s) in the pivot table disappear. I am forced to manually rebuild the pivot table by dragging the new column name(s) out of the pivot table field list. Is there any way to avoid having to do this?

name your columns right to start with

    ...

but seriously, you can rename fields within the pivot table by double clicking the field button - this leaves the source unaffected.

Apart from this, I don't know of a way to preempt this, I do what you describe if I ever rename a column - but then, I don't do this very often - do you?
