Retrieving original documents after unintentional Save

This evening I opened a document I had been working on all day and made a number of changes to it. I accidentally hit the Save instead of Save as button and overwrote my original file. Is there any way to retrieve this original file after having saved over it? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Re: Retrieving original documents after unintentional Save

The file is still there, unless it's been overwritten sometime after you did the errant save.

When Windows saves a file, it actually saves to a temporary file, verifies the save, kills the original, renames the temporary, and updates the directory. The original file is now in the pool of unused space and subject to being physically overwritten.

If it's really, really worth it, turn off your PC now, and then buy some file recovery software, or take it to a service that does it.

On the bright side, you now have religion about backing up important files, a lesson we all learn the hard way.
