Can I find several names at once?

I have a list of 900 names in excel and I need to find certain individuals by last name. I can get a list of each person I need to find...lets say 20 last names. These names are in the 900 but I would need to use the find feature and look one up at a time and this will take forever. Let’s say sheet one has the 900 names and sheet two has the 20 names. Can I find the 20 names in sheet one quickly or do I have to use the find feature to search one person at a time on the first sheet with 900 names?

    Thanks

    Hello Olddog,

You have to use Vlookup formula.

I am not sure weather you are familiar with vlookup formula or not, If not please attach a sample file.

    Hi,

Are the names exactly the same in the two lists. Your message is confusing since it speaks of 20 'last names' and I'm not clear whether the last refers to say Smith in the single cell Bill Smith, or the word Smith in the second of two columns with Bill in the first.

If the latter then just use

    =Match(one of 20 names,900 name list,False)
alongside each of you 20 names. This will tell you which row in the 900 refers to the relevant name.

    Here's the issue

I have a list of 900 names and I need to find certain individuals in that list. I need to find Joe Smith, John Jones, Larry Lovelace, etc. I can get a list of the names I need to find and place them in excel. On the first worksheet I’ll have the 900 names and on the next sheet I can have the 20 names I need to find. I want to be able to find and select the 20 names out of the 900. They’re in that large list but I don’t won’t to search one at a time using the find feature.

I'm not sure if that helped?

    Yup

Can definitely be done, but as Richard and Rahul both pointed out, we don't know exactly what your format is like.

A sample would be very beneficial.

    Hard code!

    Hello again OldDog!
Here's an example of what we need to better help you.
    It's called "Hard Code".
    Please see the attached file.

You don't have to include actual names, or any real information, but a snippet of what you're working on will let us know exactly what it is you're after.

When you're posting a reply, click on "Go Advanced" It's in the bottom right of the window you'll be typing in, then choose "Manage Attachments", and upload a file.

    Here's an example

Thanks for the help...Sorry about the spaces they are not in the original. I need to find the names off sheet 2 and select them. I'd like to place the names plus the data in columns B and C in a new sheet like sheet 3. I need to find the names from sheet2 and place the names plus the data from sheet1 into a new sheet?
