i have an uncanny knack of losing things or deleting files where i had something useful only to find i have deleted it.
i just wondered if there was anything within excel to save too?

Not sure what exactly you are asking for. I have a folder (okay more than one) of xls files that I know I will want to reference in the future (either that had formulas/macros that were very useful or that may be very useful in the future).
Excel has an Add in for Autosave if you just want to make sure you are prompted to save files.
Your Personal.xls macro book is the best place to save all your good macros.
Hope that helped.

well obviously back up your files to a secondary location (ie offline / network backup)
not a lot you can do if you delete your formulae but you can export VBA modules and save them separately -- useful if you re-use certain modules in certain contexts.
what I do is keep a text file of useful snippets of info... so as and when I come across a nice formula I store it away there for quick reference ... here's a snippet of the type of thing I store:
Why a text file ? Well in some cases some formulae necessitate ranges be setup or valid worksheets etc... sometimes I don't need the "source" data just the logic behind the calculation will suffice.![]()

I don't store much... just the "top banana" stuff.
