    Copied data will not format

I have copied data from something online. The numbers display fine, but when I try to format them to currency it does nothing. The numbers will not respond to formulas either. The only thing that I can do is re-type all of the numbers and then they will display currency and respond to formulas. Any idea how to fix this?

Try selecting the entire column and then going to Data|Text to Columns and just clicking Finish.
Where there is a will there are many ways.

Sounds like the numbers may have leading or trailing blanks, which are not immediately obvious. Try to TRIM() the data or use VALUE() to convert them to true numbers.

You could set up a temporary column to convert =VALUE(A1), then copy and paste special - values back over the original data and finally delete the temporary column.
