Autofilter greyed out

I have a spreadsheet (Excell 2000) with the Auto Filter greyed out. We have used this sheet for 3 years and never had this before. There is no protection on the sheet, there are macros attached to a form but nothing about autofilter. I have read several posts through this forum but nothing seems to help. I can't drag the Autofilter up to the tool bar either.
Any other ideas out there?
