    Question Connecting data?

Hello, first of all I would like to apologise if this has been discussed anywhere, but since as you can probably see by the topic, I don't really know how to name what I am trying to do, thus searching for it is a major inconvenience.

What I am looking for is to set cell value depending from another cells value, I know this could be done using the IF function (i guess that would be the name - I am using polish excel), but I am sure there is a more effective and easy way to do this since I have a greater number of values.

So what I am trying to do is to input product names (symbols) in column A, and I would like excel to automatically put their weight into column B, from a set of weights in another spreadsheet. So if you enter in A1 "elephant" B1 should show for example 2000kgs, but if you enter "Cat" in A1 B1 should show 2kgs.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Hi and welcome to the board,
from your dexcription it seems you need the Vlookup function. I don't have the Polish translation but it looks like =vlookup(a1,b20:c42,2,false)
