Range name disappears when saving

I'm tearing my hair out with this one.

I have a workbook containing 3 named ranges.
A macro in another workbook opens the workbook with the names in it, does some stuff then saves the opened wb with range names, with another file name.

When I open the newly named file two of the range names are still there but the third has disappeared.

Any suggestions anyone?

In the macro that saves the workbook, try checking for the existence of each name just before closing. Assuming it's already gone, back up from there.

Yes, I'd already tried this. The names are there immediately before the book is saved then closed, but on re-opening it they have disappeared.

However I've been doing some further checks. Two of the names started with the same three characters. e.g. ABC_Name1, and ABC_Name2, and it's one of those that disappears. So I created a new name, reversing the characters i.e. Name2_ABC.

Doing that has solved the original problem, which makes me wonder if Excel doesn't like names starting with the same characters. I've not yet had chance to do some testing with dummy workbooks to see if I can prove this, but I'll try tomorrow.
