    Paste Link help needed

    Hi,

New to this forum and need help with the paste link function in Excel 2003, I have searched FAQ but cannot find an exact match to my problem.

I am finding the Paste Link feature a problem.

I have a workbook with multiple worksheets and want to paste link each of the sheets into another workbook so the new workbook updates automatically.

The problem is that when I open the source workbook and select/copy the cells in a worksheet and then paste link them in the new workbook none of the formatting/colour/fonts appears in the new workbook identical to the source???

I have done some searching and find a tip that after the paste link function you leave the cells highlighted and then go to paste special and choose formats and then values etc however this seems a very cumbersome procedure and there seems to be a point where the link is broken I have noticed.

I wonder if someone might assist me with this?

    Regards,
    JB

    Welcome to the forum
    2 steps
    Select the source cells, Ctrl+c
Go the the target sheet or workbook, Ctrl+V, and don't move anything, then Paste special, links
I need your support to add reputations if my solution works.

Thanks sglife, that is really helpful and has worked for me, much appreciated.

    1. A few little things though, I have worked out using tools=>options=>uncheck zero values to get rid of zeros in the pasted blank cells however there are cells which are formatted to accounting that have a $ and - value in the new workbook where there is nothing in the formatted source cell. Is there a way to hide the formatting in the new workbook until something is typed just like the source?

    2. Each worksheet has a name in the source, any way of dragging that over to the new book?

    Regards,
    John

I think I have stumbled on the $ - formatting fix.

After I do the ctrl+v and then paste links, I go to tools/options and remove the zero vales check and then do an undo which returns the merged cells as they were and also removes the accounting formatting $ - symbol.

Not sure why but works for me.

Still not sure how to get the sheet names across?

    JB

Hmmm, I spoke too soon, I did not notice the link was broken using that procedure.

    Drives you mad this.

Here is the file I am arguing with.

You will see that when you do the paste links, all the merged cells change and $ - symbols appear for accounting formatted cells in the new workbook.

    John

I wonder if someone might take the file I have attached here and see if they can paste link one of the worksheets in a new workbook and get an IDENTICAL match to the original i.e.formatting/column widths/merged cells etc etc

The cut/paste and then paste link procedure does not seem to be working for me?

    Regards,
    JB
