    Multiplying cells

    Hi,

    I'm fairly new to excel and teaching myself slowly but surely. I need to multiply various cells by a particular % and a little unsure how to do so. I've figured out that you can multiply cells by putting a figure into an empty cell then copying it and using the special paste/multiply function but I can't figure out how to do this using a % rather than a decimal.

    Any help would be good.

    Hi Flacky2000

    Welcome to the forum, believe me there is so much to learn about Excel.

    Not very clear as the result that you require and whether or not you are using a fixed or variable percentage.

    If it is likely to change then select an empty cell and format this as a percentage, which can then be used in your formulas to calculate the result.

    For example, if do this in A1 with data in A3 downwards plus your formula to calculate the result in adjacent cells of column B e.g.

    A1 = 6%
    A3 = 9
    B3 = A3*A1 (result as a percentage of A3)
    or
    B3 = A3+A3*A1 (percentage as a total value)

    If you do not want to use a seperate cell for the percentage, then just put the percentage in decimal format within the formula.

    i.e. A3*0.06

    Thanks for your quick reply, I'll try to help you a bit more with what I need. I've got vaious cells (which represent our cost price) and would like to increase them all by the same %. I know it's a real simple one but I suppose you've got to start somewhere.

    Sorry if i'm being a pain

    Have a look at the attached workbook, it should solve your problem.

    The advantage of using the seperate cell for the percentage change is that you can just alter the figure in that cell to give you updated calculations at different percentages.

    Hi Flacky and welcome to the board
    If it's a one-shot operation try the following
    Increasing a value with a given percentage is the same as multiplying it with 1+percentage (f.i. 1.06)
    So, enter 1.06 ( or your value) in an empty cell
    Select and copy that cell
    Select all cells you want to increase
    Right click
    Select Paste Special
    Select multiply
    OK
    That should do it

    Cheers

    Cheers for all your help. The simple way of changing the % to a decimal and multiplying the cells was enough for me.

    Cheers again
