Copy names from sheet to sheet

You'd think this was easy but I'm stumped. I have a gradebook with a column of names on the left. I have several other sheets in the same workbook and I just want to be able to automatically have all the names in the first sheet appear in the others as well so I don't have to retype it all. I have tried something like ='Grade Book'!$A$6 and it works great for the first time. But when I copy it to the second row it just blindly shows the exact text of the formula instead of running the function. I'd assume you enter

    ='Grade Book'!$A$6
    ='Grade Book'!$A$7
    ='Grade Book'!$A$8
    etc...

Right? Or am I missing something? Is this some kind of formatting isssue?

    Almost right
the '$' means don't move me...
it will always reference back to that fixed cell no matter where you paste the formula.
For this just delete the '$' signs in the formula in the first cell (A6) and copy/paste from it again.
Oh and the formula showing thing happens to me sometimes too :D

    Welcome to the forum.

If you type in a formula and it remains displayed as a formula rather than showing a result, it's because the cell is formatted as text. Format > Cells > Number, then select General or any other numeric format. Then select the cell, put the cursor in the formula bar, and hit Enter.
