    Grouping By Chars

    Hi all,

My first time here but I've came on recommendation from a good friend. Basically I work for an Insurance Company I have a list of clients with all their relevant policies attached to their account.

Each client "policy" is given a reference relevant to their surname, first letter of surname, what "number" of client they are and then their relevant policy code. For example I would be JONJ01PC01 - for my Private car and then have a JONJ01LE01 for my legal, so on and so forth.

What I need to do is get something to check the first 6 characters and if any other records in the spreadsheet match (such as JONJ01(PC01) and JONJ01(LE01)) then it will group both the PC01 and LE01 under a single JONJ01 Reference.

This way I could add the Premium from both the PC01 and LE01 together and work out the Average for say 7 days worth of business.

Any help on this would be appreciated as this is really killing me to work this out .

    Regards

    James
