I have a column with daily dates (1/1/08, 1/2/08, etc) and a daily earning in the column. I wanted to know how I could get the average earnings per month. How would I go about doing it the quickest method?

The easiest method would be to create a pivot table.
put the cursor anywhere in the data.
Click on Data and select Pivot table..
Then follow the instruction..
