    Linking two excel files

I am trying to link cell C20 in A.xls to cell D45 in B.Xls. After I type "=" on C20, and take the cursor to B.xls, I cannot do anything there. The cell pointer shows the symbol similar to the one we get when we have to click on an internet link.

    Thanks.

    I can't replicate the problem,
What is in the cell you are trying to link to?

In B.xls there is a formula which gives a number, which I want in A.xls.

I am just trying to understand why it changes to a button,
    Maybe the cell is Hyperlink??
    or
Does it turn to a button all the time or just when you are trying to reference it to another workbook??
did you have buttons on the sheet and delete rows but not the buttons?

    Use this formula:

I did this by first Alt-Tabbing to B.xls, then moving the cursor to the cell.

Thanks the cell is not a hyperlink and it turns to button only when I am trying to link the cells. Linking to other files works fine.

But I have worked out a way around this problem, but I am still not sure how/why this happens.
