    Locking cells

    Hi all

Am new to this, but after some help!

I am fairly good with Excel but a work colleague asked me a question and it had me well and truly stumped

What she wanted was to have cells unlocked, then once data is entered into them the cell automatically locks down and the data entered cant be adjusted unless you have the password

Any ideas on how to do this

    Many thanks
    Rickie

    locking cells

    Unfortunately it doesnt!

if i give a brief example then hopefully someone could come up with something

student number student name student DOB ETC ETC
    11000 BOB 01/01/1475
    11001 JANE 01/02/1475
    11002 CHRIS 01/03/1475

So below 11002 is a blank cell, what I have in place is that when the student number is eneterd it populates the rest of the fields, BUT unless I constantly lock the whole sheet each time the details can be deleted, what I need is an automatic lock down each time a student number is enetered, so it pulls through the data and then the data cant be deleted as the cells automatically lock with the rest of the spreadsheet, they can only tamper with the empty cells. cos we send the spreadsheet out to companies we dont want them to be able to tamper with the data but we do need them to enter on there student details.

Hope this sheds more light on what i need!

    thanks

    tell more . . .

I'm a bit slow, but trying to understand:

So when the user keys 11003,
    1. the data for the rest of the cells will be pulled (from somewhere else - where??) by a formula in each adjacent cell(??) or code filling the range (??) or something else (??)

    2. once the user presses enter, or ciicks away, all cells in the sheet will be locked?
    including the one containing 11003??
what if the user makes a d/entry mistake and keys 11103??

Suggest you start your own thread and describe what it is that YOU are trying to achieve and, if possible, attach an example of your sheet.
