Insert problem when sheet is protected.

    My Excel says its 2002.

I select a range of cells and unlock them.

I protect sheet, selecting: user can use unlocked cells, insert rows, delete rows, insert columns, delete columns.

When I right click to insert, delete, these options are grayed out and not available to use.

Is there anyway I can copy a cell and insert down when sheet is protected?

Not as far as I'm aware. Surely that's the whole point of sheet protection?

    Protect Sheet locked cells.

    The Protect Sheet selection menu:

X "Protect worksheet and contents of locked cells"

"Allow all users of this worksheet to:"

    X "Insert columns"
    X "Insert rows"

All cells for the purpose of inserting are unlocked.

It should work as selected, shouldn't it?

    Hi,

Slight confusion. When you used the word 'checked' I was assuming you meant 'tested'. What you obviously meant was 'ticked' - put it down to the aphorism about the US and UK being two peoples divided by a common language

The misunderstanding was also slightly compounded by the fact that I'm using a MacBook, and the Apple version of Excel is inevitably slightly different in its language to the PC version.

You didn't mention the 'Select Locked Cells' box. If you also check this you should be able to delete and insert rows/columns as you expect.

X(s) for check marks in the selection boxes

The X(s) shown represent check marks in the selection boxes, something I do not know how to type with the keyboard.

    X = check mark (selected).

When I 'Select Locked Cells', still not able to insert and lets user go anywhere on the sheet.
By limiting user to only the unlocked cells, this permits entry of data only in cells I have designated.

The inserting I need is done by macro and until I can get this to function to work in the sheet protected state, I will have to leave it unprotected. I have tried both ways manually and macro. No success.

    Sorry about the terminology.
