    Text file opens "fixed width"

    Hi everybody,

Whenever I open text files in Excel, the data is always in column A. I have to use the "Text to Column" to convert the data to something usable.

However, now when I open a text file, Excel "automatically" converts it but the columns are all wrong.

I might have save a setting somewhere and I can't find it.

    Hello ledzepe,

Check your "Text to Columns" wizard settings. The option setting for the "Original Document" should be set to "Delimited" , not "Fixed Width".

    Sincerely,

    Hi Leath,

I've tried to open this text file on 2 other PCs with the same Excel 2003 SP3. On the 2 other PCs, the text opens up "unformatted", meaning the text are all in column A and I have to run my "normal" text to column procedure. On my PC, the same text file opens up "formatted", meaning the data is arranged by column but not necessarily in the arrangement I want it to be.

Whenever I open the "Text to Column" wizard it defaults to "delimited".

Is there a way to go back to the default setting in Excel?
