How to create a Macro or function to execute a program

I would like to do the following. I have a connection to Reuters which
feeds numbers at periodic times to the Excel sheet. When I recieve these numbers
I would like to check if the number is larger and smaller than a certain range.
After the result of this calculation I would like excel to run a Macro to run another
program from my PC depending on the calulation.
Eg. If the number is bigger than 8 then run program A
If the number is Less than 6 then run program B
Is this possible and could someone please show me where to start. If there is
anothr solution please let me know

    Hello akadoggs,

This macro will start the application program for any registered file type. It requires the file name (with the extension), and the directory path. Once the the program is started, it is minimized to the task bar. Instructions follow on how to save the macro.

    Adding the Macro
    1. Copy the macro above pressing the keys CTRL+C
    2. Open your workbook
    3. Press the keys ALT+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor
    4. Press the keys ALT+I to activate the Insert menu
    5. Press M to insert a Standard Module
    6. Paste the code by pressing the keys CTRL+V
    7. Make any custom changes to the macro if needed at this time
    8. Save the Macro by pressing the keys CTRL+S
    9. Press the keys ALT+Q to exit the Editor, and return to Excel.

    Macro Example
This examples launchs the application associated with a text file. This is usually NotePad. The file path and file name (including extension) are supplied as arguments to the macro. Because the macro requires arguments, it is not shown in the Macro Dialog Box (press ALT+F8 in Excel to see available macros).
