    Data Validation Defined Names

I have attached what, as far as I can figure out is two identical workbooks. Both have the same defined names (Instruments, Analysts, Products) on a sheet called Lists. In both, I tried to use those defined names on the other sheet for Data Validation. In one workbook (2008A), it worked. In the second, it didn't. Any explainations? I've tried renaming, clearing, etc but can't get the second one to work with the data validation.

    Thanks

I havent looked at your attachements but did you copy the named ranges from one workbook to the other?, it may be that it is looking for the other workbook to be open for the named ranges to work, try going to the toolbar and checking INSERT, NAMES, DEFINE and see what range each name refers to!

Yes, I had checked that and even deleted the defined names and re-entered them.

This can happen sometimes, i'm afraid you will have to insert a new sheet, copy your old one then in the new sheet paste special values, paste special formats then you should be able to create the validation you want.

FYI the validation still exists in your old sheet but just wont display the dropdown, try typing something that isn't in the validation list and hit enter, you get the error message.
